Shepherd’s Cottage (Sleeps 2)

Welcome to this rustic romantic cottage for two, built in the 1500’s, now lovingly renovated to create the perfect escape for couples, nestled between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Lake District.

Lounge and kitchen are linked together complete with homely Aga in one end and wood burner in the other.  There’s a quirky little pantry too, where you’ll find an honesty bar with local beers, spirits & fizz. Upstairs there’s a huge bedroom with hand made 4 poster super-kingsize bed, changing room and beautiful bathroom with double ended roll top bath & separate shower.  There’s also a small child’s room, just large enough for a travel cot or z-bed, on request.

If you enjoy being outdoors then the roll top cast iron bath in the walled garden is just for you!!  Piping hot water on tap, fill with bubbles and enjoy a soak under the stars, swimsuit or birthday suit, the choice is yours.

After a walk on the fells, it’s time to pop open the complimentary chilled champagne from the welcome hamper and relax with just the sounds of the countryside around you.

Inside the Cottage it’s spacious yet homely with oak beamed ceilings, original stone mantle over the claret Aga and old spice cupboard.  An ancient flag stone welcomes you into the handmade kitchen, which has been lovingly created by Richard. Everything you need to cook up a feast can be found in the kitchen, it’s a home from home. If cooking isn’t your thing, then you can simply wander across the footpath to The Fat Lamb Inn, just 5 fields away.  There are two more great pubs in the village of Ravenstonedale, 3 miles away.

Enjoy the treats inside the champagne welcome hamper, which include a delicious homemade cake from Katie’s Cakes and artisan sourdough bread from Ivy Cottage Baker, local handmade chocolates from Kennedy’s Chocolate Shop, hand toasted Lakeland Mues muesli and the most amazing apple juice made here in Cumbria by Eva’s Organics – the perfect start to your holiday.

Relax in your own
romantic retreat

The kitchen is connected to a spacious lounge with Harris Tweed sofas just waiting to snuggle up on.  Why not watch a film, disappear into a good book or catch up with the outside world using the superfast WiFi.  The wood burning stove is ready to light in winter and for summer the back door opens up to the sunset patio with a comfy all weather sofa, perfect for that early evening glass of wine.

The walled cottage garden has lots of space to relax, pop yourselves on the all weather outdoor sofa with a book, or enjoy lunch in the sunshine.  As the evening draws in you can light a fire in the quirky fire pit made from an up-cycled washing machine drum for a bbq then add some logs and watch the flames flicker or luxuriate in the outdoor cast iron bath as the stars above bring in the night.

Retreating inside, take the old stone steps that lead upstairs, wind your way up to the changing room.  An oak framed wall and wardrobe on one side, dressing table on the other, a relaxing space to get ready.

Through the doorway you enter the heavenly bathroom – the roll top cast iron bath is double ended with plenty of room for a candle lit soak for two.  There’s a large separate shower too with lovely toiletries from the Bath House to use, along with huge towels and fluffy robes to relax in.  The window overlooks both the cottage garden and the fells beyond.

In the bedroom stands a magnificent four poster super-kingsize bed, made by Richard from reclaimed timber.  Climb in, gaze at the 400 year old oak beamed rafters and drift off to sleep on the super Sealy mattress, made here in Cumbria.  The view from bed lasts for miles, all the way to Blencathra, 30 miles away!  Underfoot you’ll find locally made Herdwick wool carpets, one of the area’s traditional breeds of sheep.

If you have family there’s an additional tiny room which we can transform for your little one, just big enough for a travel cot or z-bed, both of which can be provided on request (z-bed £25).  The sloped ceiling makes it a fab hideaway for youngsters who want their own little den (under 10’s only).

Dogs are very welcome in the Shepherd’s Cottage, the garden is enclosed and there’s plenty of space to wander. We just ask that if they like to sit on the sofa then bring their favourite rugs with them, please don’t allow them on the bed or leave them unsupervised in the cottage whilst you go out.  All 3 of our village pubs are dog friendly so your pooch can eat out with you in style. It’s £25 per dog and they will be welcomed with a doggie hamper with Sir Woofchester treats, made in Cumbria, spare bowls and towels.

During your stay take a peak inside our Shed Shop, filled with handmade arts and crafts and local foodie treats created by ourselves, friends and family. It’s an honesty shop which you can access anytime of day, using the key code provided in the Cottage.
