The history of Low Stennerskeugh goes back a long way. The buildings
are sited on an ancient Norse settlement. Stennerskeugh translates from Norse as ‘Stone Trees’
referring to the local limestone pavements of the same name. Evidence of a Roman marching
camp can be found in an adjacent pasture, a stopping off point on the Roman road that runs
over Stennerskeugh Bridge. We have traced the history of the current buildings back to
1560 and have stumbled across a number of coins and carvings during our renovation work.
